Weekly 5: Dynamic Color Work

This week, I set out to explore a wider variety of weave structures as well as color shifting pigments. I explored using yarn dyed with these pigments in both the warp and the wefts of my swatches.

For the first swatch, my loom partner and I painted patches of our warp in a gradient between the two available colors.

In addition, I experimented with using the weft yarn I dyed in the dyed section of the warp, then added in a second weft yarn in black to create contrast. I also experimented with warp floats and not fully packing my wefts, which I think made a pretty cool effect.

In my second swatch, I continued to experiment with the dyed weft yarn, as well as not fully packing in my weft to create a bit of a looser look to the top and bottom of the swatch. In the middle, I decided to try to do a shaded twill, which did not turn out as intended though I think that the warp floats left look very cool.

In all, this week I explored new weaving structures as well as incorporations of different color patterns, and I feel like this experience was valuable to my growth as a weaver. I am excited about how parts of this week’s swatches turn out, and am very excited to see what we do next.
